When Katie came to Fitstreet her goal was very clear; to lose a substantial amount of body fat and get back to her pre-pregnancy size and shape. She juggled a busy life, working full time in London and commuting from her home in Surrey each morning at 5am. She worked long hours before coming home to spend time with her young daughter. Finding the time and energy for exercise, let alone healthy eating, had become a real challenge for Katie!

We talked through her current lifestyle, time available for exercise, and the fact that results would only come with hard work. Katie wanted to take the bull by the horns and exercise 5 nights a week. I warned her that this was unrealistic and that there would be a greater risk of her giving up, due to fatigue and overtraining. We compromised and decided to settle on 3 sessions a week.

Our first session together was one we would look back on and laugh at in the coming weeks and months. It really was to become a gauge for future progress! We walked around the block 3 times from Katie's house in 1 hour. Katie told me her feet were burning, her legs ached and she was sweating profusely. She couldn't believe I was planning to make her walk round a fourth time! Being her first session I let her off the final lap. We had covered about 1.5 miles, a distance she admitted she hadn't walked in years!

From this point onwards we continued to up the pace, incorporating some hills into her walks, and mixing the aerobic work with resistance exercises, focusing mainly on her lower back and posture, both of which needed a fair amount of work. Very quickly the walks became relatively easy, so we began using circuits at each session, to keep Katie's heart rate up and move her from one exercise to the next, with little rest between.

Katie would focus on bodyweight exercises to begin with, performing squats and lunges to target her hips and bum, while practicing box push ups, cable-band work and swiss ball exercises to strengthen her core and improve her balance. As she became stronger we would add medicine ball drills to her workouts to keep the body guessing and make no 2 reps the same. Mixed with boxing, using focus pads, and rowing on the Concept 2 machine, Katie began to see quick results in her body shape and weight.

Although hard work, Katie began to enjoy the discipline of making time for exercise, and was encouraged by the results she was starting to see physically. From the very start we tackled her nutrition, a key factor in getting the results that come from effective exercise. I began to teach Katie about her daily diet and where she had been going wrong over the years. Like so many new clients, she had always skipped breakfast and didn't eat enough throughout the day, causing her metabolism to drop considerably.

As she learned to change her eating patterns, Katie was losing weight at a gradual pace and it was important to keep this momentum up. Exercises were changed and intensity was increased to ensure that we were constantly testing Katie's body and not giving it the chance to switch off...
