1: Understand how your life will improve with better health
and fitness
Making a physical and mental change will be beneficial. Deep down, you know why good health and fitness make sense.
2: To make a lasting change, believe that you can change now
If you think that you should exercise, should eat healthily and should change your lifestyle, then you won't. If you should do something then you're not 100% convinced that it's a necessary action. Achieving good health is a necessary action! You must want to do it.
3: Identify what you want to achieve, and what currently holds you back
Unless you can put your finger on what is preventing you from living a healthier lifestyle, you will never make the changes that you need to. You must be completely honest with yourself, even if it means admitting to certain factors that you really enjoy, but know to be detrimental to your health or general wellbeing. (Examples might include; getting drunk on a Saturday night, craving chocolate or staying up late).
4: Inspire yourself to act. Focus on what you have achieved in your life
Sometimes we all need to make comparison, or draw on other experiences, to find solution. Think of something that you have achieved in life. It doesn't matter what it is, big or small. Simply focus on that achievement. Think about how good you felt once you had done it. That achievement required a lot of hard work, but the end result made it all worth it.
5: Draw on experience of achievement to develop a healthy lifestyle
People often associate exercise with pain. With the vision of the mountain that we just discussed, it's understandable. Who in their right mind, stood at the base of a snow-capped mountain, would feel happy tackling its sheer rock face in one go? Not many. That's why climbers set up camp along the way, to break their ascent into sizeable chunks. In the same way, achieving a healthy lifestyle needs progressive stages.
6: Listen to the RIGHT voice inside your head
Wipe the slate clean. Start listening to your inner voice. It's what currently stops you from achieving the results that you want. Negative self-talk does you harm. It puts you down, sets you in the wrong frame of mind, and leaves you unproductive. Positive self-talk gives you strength and direction.
7: Visualise The Results You Want!
Don't just think it - add visual images to your positive self-talk. Words are just words until you add powerful, emotion-filled pictures. You need to condition your mind so you associate things in a way that makes you feel and behave the way you want to, instead of the way you don't want to.
8: Give up the Excuses.
We hear every excuse under the sun from clients' unable to make changes to their lifestyle. On occasion it's fair enough. Consistently it's just not good enough. You have to take charge of your own actions.
9: Interrupt old behaviour patterns
You must take responsibility for your actions and put these ideas into practice, by learning to interrupt old behaviour patterns that are interfering with your success. Asking yourself positive questions allows you to take ownership of your behaviour, and weigh up the costs of straying from the right path.
10: Replace old behaviour patterns with new more fulfilling alternatives
Giving up old behaviour patterns completely is going to take time, so we need to make sure that new patterns are in place from the start, to help you stay the course of this programme, and reduce the temptation to fall back into old ways.
