It's a fact. People's misconceptions of exercise, the effectiveness of their programs and a lack of patience are all at fault. Many people believe their bodies
will be transformed overnight, thanks to countless advertising gimmicks, promising magic, long-lasting results. The truth is there are no short cuts. Achieving your fitness goals takes time.
Effective exercise requires hard work and focus. No sweating = no calories burnt - FACT. Men and women fail to push themselves hard enough, and without a challenge, you're not changing anything. So, what's the answer?
Better knowledge
People need to know how to exercise properly. Getting the right mix of ingredients is what counts; effective cardio, resistance work, core training and most important of all, a sound diet.
'Cardio' involves getting the heart pumping - running, skipping, cycling. even playing ball with the kids in the garden! Cardio workouts must have 'set goals'. Aim for a certain distance or time and work on gradual improvement. Make it measurable and, more importantly, achievable with a little hard work. DON'T just work at one set pace. Take the effort up and down throughout each session, keeping your heart rate elevated. It's called 'Interval Training'.
DON'T shy away from weights either. Worried about that bodybuilder look? Relax! Women don't possess enough testosterone to build bulky muscle naturally, BELIEVE me! Muscles burn calories. Resistance training is vital for strengthening bone structure and fighting off osteoporosis (bone shrinkage) in later life. Resistance work will make you stronger, leaner and a walking 'fat-burner'!
Use weights for each exercise that make finishing the last few repetitions challenging. Aim for 8 - 12 reps for the best results, and increase the weight over time. Experiment a little at first to see what feels right. You'll soon find a happy medium. But don't just focus on the muscles you can see. Strength comes from within, literally.
'Core Training' is the most important ingredient of all - the tightening and toning of our natural 'body armour' - the stomach and lower back. Without a strong foundation on which to build, you open yourself up to all kinds of injury.
How many people do you know that suffer from back pain? Maybe you're one of them. Do you write it off as part of 'getting older' or do you question why you are suffering? Most back problems can be solved by strengthening the body's Core. What you need is an inflatable ball, known as a 'Fitball'.
This is THE tool to own in strengthening your lower back and abdominals. No other piece of kit will work as well as this. It's cheap, versatile, fun, challenging and most of all, it's effective. Your kids will love playing with it too! Go to any sports shop or gym and see one for yourself. Once you have one, get proper instruction on how to use it effectively.
Eating healthily 90% of the time is what makes a good body. It's like running an expensive car. There's no point in owning a Lexus if you're not going to top the oil up. You'll end up with a car that might look the part but needs lots of repairs! As a rule, avoid junk food and anything that looks like it's been processed. At the same time increase your intake of raw or freshly prepared foods. Your body will thank you for it in the long run.
Finally, throw away your bathroom scales. Forget about your weight, it's not important. Your body composition is what counts - the amount of fat your body carries compared to lean muscle. Have your bodyfat measured. It will give you a good indication of your current health and fitness. The lower the figure is, the healthier and leaner you are likely to be. Arming yourself with this information is the surest way of knowing whether your current fitness program plan is effective, or just a lot of sweating for very little gain!
