The role of a GOOD Personal Trainer

Many people think that Personal Trainers are a waste of time. Most people can exercise on their own in the gym or at home, if the mood takes them, so why on earth would they need someone else's help? After all, what more is a Personal Trainer than a glorified rep counter who supervises exercises and tells you how well you're doing? A lot more, if he or she is any good at their job.

Firstly a good Personal Trainer will not work by a random selection of numbers or exercises. He or she will assess the client in question and determine what they need, to improve their posture and reduce their risk of injury or strain.

Most clients who live sedentary lives or are desk-bound most of the day will need more attention to the rear of the body, instead of the mirror muscles they see to their front. A good trainer will be able to visually spot postural faults and create a program that helps address these issues effectively.

A good trainer will decide what is good for the client rather than pandering to what the client thinks they need. Many people, for example, come to trainers obsessing about a six pack or a flat stomach. They want to do endless crunches or leg raises, when what they really need to focus on is inner core stability - which doesn't require a single crunch to begin with. A good trainer will tell the client when they feel that their goals or targets are unrealistic.

With a good trainer you will be paying for a training program, NOT supervision.
It is our job to build a progressive schedule of exercise around YOU, that will get you results week on week, provided that you adhere to the advice given. With a good program the client will get results in half the time it would take to figure it out on their own. Think of a good trainer as a navigator, not a rep counter or a 'gym nanny'!

A good trainer will go the extra mile for his or her clients, and offer more than just an hour of exercise once, twice or three times a week. He or she will also provide suitable guidance on nutrition and lifestyle that works for each client. Exercise alone will NOT get you good results. It is merely one piece of the puzzle. At Fitstreet you are given all the tools you need to achieve your results.

Finally, a good trainer will keep tabs on what you are doing session to session. They will know when to increase resistance and by how much. They will reassess on a regular basis and provide the client with details of their progression since the previous assessment.

They should also form good friendships with their clients and be ready to help them, even after the hour session has finished. After all, the results you will get from an exercise program will come between sessions, when you are resting, eating and living as you have been instructed.

Pick a good trainer and you will go far!
